Under attack from opposition over allegations that a trust run by his family received donations from some firms,Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa today hit back, levelling charges pertaining to site allotment and illegal trading of iron ore against JDS chief H D Deve Gowda's family.

Speaking in the Karnataka Legislative Council, Yeddyurappa said on a single day during Gowda's tenure as Chief Minister, 48 sites were allotted by Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) to the former Prime Minister's family.

Yeddyurappa also sought to raise issues surrounding 'BSK Trading company', but could not be heard due to protests by JDS members and his statement was drowned in the din.

Cess story a big mess

E-mail Print PDF

BBMP's garbage management is pathetic. While it's easy to impose and collect a cess for this, is there accountability for garbage that's not collected regularly and in payments to contractors who clear it? Chances are money will again start flowing to people favoured to dispose of garbage. Also, will residents segregate dry and wet waste and have separate covers for them? Will pourakarmikas keep it in separate bins?

BBMP has failed to provide the scientific landfill for processing 3,200 metric tones of waste generated daily. BBMP has failed to justify the cess without implementing any new measures in solid waste management.

Green City yet to warm up to plastic ban

E-mail Print PDF

We love green causes, but convenience is far more important than the environment. That’s what it seems like on the first day of the rest of our lives without plastic bags thinner than 40 microns.

Be it posh neighbourhoods of Indiranagar or middle-class bylanes of Ulsoor, thin plastic bags were being sold and carried everywhere on Tuesday, when the ban came into force. “I know about the ban but because I’m in a hurry, I had to pick up this bag,” said Parvati S, who was on her way to work and picked up a plastic bag of fruits in Koramangala.

Many people like Parvati who came to the Indiranagar Market and CMH Road were carrying thin plastic bags in a clear violation of the ban.

As always, Shahul Hameed’s vegetable shop had customers flocking to the counter and he stuffed all their purchases in plastic bags. “These days, many people are getting their own bags; I’m not sure if it’s because they knew about the ban. We spend Rs 95 every day on buying 150 plastic bags from City Market. It’d be great if everyone gets their own bags,” he said.
