In a tragic incident, five boys of Tavarakere Government School drowned in Ganganna lake in Tavarekere police station limits, off Magadi, on Thursday. The five fourth standard students, aged nine, went for a swim after 4pm. No one could confirm whether they attended classes on Thursday.
The tragedy came to light after their uniforms were spotted on the banks of the lake. The incident comes just after four youngsters drowned in Nelligudda lake, Bidadi, on March 3. They were among 11 who had gone on a picnic.
The bodies of V Somashekar and V Ajit Kumar were fished out at 9.45pm and 10.15pm respectively. The bodies of the other three — C Vishwaraj, B Suhail Khan and N Praveen Kumar — were recovered between 10.30pm and 11pm.
According to police, a passer-by informed them on seeing four pairs of uniforms on the bank of the lake around 6.30pm. Police alerted Tavarakere fire officials who rushed to the spot with one fire tender and personnel.

Metro Reach 1 prepares for commissioner's visit
It is going to be an acid test for Namma Metro, which is expecting the visit of the commissioner of railway safety next week.
The approval of the commissioner of railway safety is important as only then the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd will be able to start its commercial operations.
Commissioner of Railway Safety KJS Naidu is expected to visit the Reach 1 (Byapanahalli to MG Road) metro areas by next weekend.
“We have received the communication from Bangalore Metro and as per the set date, inspection will be carried out,” KJS Naidu, CRS (South Zone) said.
The safety certification for Bangalore metro will involve a detailed inspection and analyses of every aspect related to Bangalore metro.
“Right from the basic metro design to the nitty gritty related to the rail tracks, signalling work and other issues will be studied,” Naidu added.
Reason for inpection
The Commission of Railway Safety deals with matters pertaining to safety of rail travel and train operation and also performs such statutory functions as laid down in the Railways Act (1989), which are inspectorial, investigatory and advisory in nature.

Your Walk To The Metro Station Will Be No Moonwalk
Your ride on the Metro will be smooth. But not so walking your way to the Metro stations.
When the first Metro services are finally launched, only 100m on either side of all the Metro station areas along Reach-1 track from Byappanahalli to MG Road will see new footpaths and good walkability conditions. The joint plans with city corporation to replace the missing slabs along the remaining footpath stretches as part of the bigger ‘Metro zone’ agenda are still under discussion.
Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) says:Only the 100 m stretches on either side of the station areas will be developed as part of the project.Developing the remaining stretches will happen only on partnership with the municipal body. In this case — the BBMP.
