On a day all five Electricity Supply Companies (Escoms) in the Karnataka sought a 20% tariff hike or 51 paise per unit from the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC), the State Government has decided to lay the foundation stone for implementing 4,000 mw thermal power plant through the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) at Kudigi in Bijapur district in November.
Karnataka’s energy minister K S Eshwarappa a joint meeting of NTPC and government officials on Tuesday said the project would come up on 3,600 acres at Kudigi. The state’s water resources department has agreed to supply 5.27 tmcft of water from Almatti dam to the project.
The first unit would become operational after 48 months of the ground breaking ceremony, Eshwarappa said promising to provide jobs to locals with NTPC building a school, hospital and provide other amenities to nearby villages.
Former Minister and BJP MLA S K Bellubbi and Bijapur MP Ramesh Chandrappa Jigjinagi, who attended the meeting, said the locals have agreed to provide lands if the Government offered good compensation.
Meanwhile, the state energy department’s principal secretary K Jairaj said the Escoms have filed a petition before the state’s power regulator seeking 20% tariff hike for all categories of consumers. However, the free power to irrigation pumpsets and subsidised supply to Bhagya Jyothi and Kutir Jyothi consumers would continue as the Government has announced subsidy to these categories. |

The state-run Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) Ltd has set up a next-generation data centre at its main facility on the outskirts of this tech hub in collaboration with the Mumbai-based leading IT infrastructure and services firm Trimax Data Centre Services Ltd.
The Rs.77 crore (Rs.770 million) data centre, which will provide customer-centric services to the government and private enterprises, was unveiled Tuesday by Telecom Secretary and Telecom Commission chairman Siddhartha Behura in Doorvaninagar campus, about 20 km from here.
The 50-seater ITI data centre will offer a range of services, including co-location services, hosting services and managed services such as server management, network management and security management.
“The prime business focus of the data centre will be the value-added services such as messaging solutions, video conferencing and remote infrastructure management,” ITI chairman and managing director S.K. Chatterjee told here.
As per the joint agreement, 82 percent of the revenue generated by the data centre will be credited with Trimax, while the rest will accrue to ITI.
ITI is in final discussions with the state-run RailTel Corporation of India Ltd, New Delhi; Karnataka Police Housing Ltd, Bangalore; Business Intelligent Technologies, Bangalore; Glodyne, Mumbai; and Madhucon, Hyderabad to engage them as customers for data centre services. |

Kingfisher Airlines, an Indian-based air carrier, on Thursday launched its inaugural daily flight between Dubai and the southern city of Bangalore.
The air carrier, part of the UB Group headed by businessman Vijay Mallya, is a key player in India's air travel industry.
The Dubai service is the airline's fourth international destination after London, Colombo and Dhaka.
According to Siva Ramachandran, Vice-President for Global Sales at Kingfisher Airlines, other Gulf destinations are being considered.
"Points in Saudi Arabia are under evaluation, in terms of economics as well as regulatory approval," Ramachandran said, adding that an Abu Dhabi flight was also being considered.
"We would not be operating here unless we were confident we would make money from it." |

South Western Railway (SWR) has introduced an eight-coach diesel electrical multiple unit (DEMU) passenger train between Kolar-Bangarpet-Bangalore Cantonment. The train was inaugurated by minister of state for railways, K H Muniyappa, at Kolar station on June 18.
As per the revized schedule, Kolar-Bangalore Cantonment DEMU passenger (No. 502) departs Kolar at 7.15 am and arrives at Bangalore Cantonment at 9.50 am. |

With seven swine flu cases reported in Bangalore, the Karnataka government on Saturday announced the setting up of a second isolation ward to treat patients with HIN1 flu symptoms.
The second ward at the state-run Victoria Hospital in the city centre will have eight beds.
"Out of the seven confirmed swine flu cases in Bangalore, six patients are undergoing treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases (RGICD), and one in Lakeside Hospital," said RGICD director Shashidhar Buggi.
Lakeside Medical Centre and Hospital, a private facility in the city, has also started treating patients with swine flu symptoms.
"We don't want to take any chances and are making sure that adequate arrangements are in place to treat patients affected by swine flu," health commissioner Shrinivasachari said. |
