The price of progress could get steeper. Teeming cities like Bangalore will have to tread in caution between development and disorder, if a new study by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) is any indication. Rapid urbanisation is hampering the economic infrastructure and leaving vital services at risk in Asian cities, the study says.
The report, 'Managing Asian Cities', shows that among Indian cities with 50 lakh or more residents, Bangalore is the second fastest growing in terms of population. Bangalore, with an annual population growth rate of 2.8%, is next only to Delhi (3.5%). |

Bangalore witnesses maiden Rath Yatra in grand style

Amid chants of 'Jai Jagannath and Haribol' the first ever Rath Yatra in Bangalore was celebrated in grand style and grandeur at Jagannath Temple here in the city on Friday.
Over 5 thousand Oriyas staying in Bangalore and adjacent areas throng to the Jagganath temple since morning to witness the Yatra.
Amidst chanting of Jai Jagannath coupled with the music of drums, cymbals, bugles and ghantas the thousands of devotees pulling the Chariot to Mausi Maa Mandir.
Hundreds of devotees offered fruits, flowers, prayers to the Lord, his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra. |

Bangalore: Man held for killing wife

A case has been registered in Suntikoppa police station regarding the murder of a woman by her husband at Nakuru (Kanbailu) village. Police have arrested the accused Chandra on charges of murdering his wife Padma (36), who suspected her chastity.
The family was staying in a home in the premises of a coffee plantation in Nakuru. The couple were reportedly working in the same plantation. Police said the accused had assaulted his wife continuously for the past three days suspecting an extra-marital affair. He had beaten her severely on Tuesday morning too and Padma reportedly died when she was being carried to the government hospital in Suntikoppa, police informed. |

Heroin smugglers caught by DRI

Based on intelligence reports officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, Bangalore, intercepted two passengers, viz., Ms. Khaektet Thitaree, a Thai National, aged 23 years and Mr. Mwinshehe Shabani Selemani, a Tanzanian National, aged 36 years, while they were attempting to smuggle out Heroin through the Bengaluru International Airport during the wee hours of July 2, 2008.
Ms. Khaektet Thitaree, who is a Thai National was intercepted while she was about to board the Malaysian Airlines Flight No. MH 0193 at 00.50 hrs on July 2, 2008. The examination of her two checked-in baggage resulted in the recovery of 2080 grams of Heroin concealed in the false bottom of the baggage. The contraband valued at Rs.7 crores approximately at International Market was seized.
She actually travelled from New Delhi to Bangalore by Jetlite flight on July 1, 2008, and reached Bangalore on 21.25 hrs and was taking the connecting flight to Kuala Lumpur at 00.50 hrs on July 2, 2008. On interrogation, she further stated that she is a student and has come to India for a short visit. She carried the baggage containing Narcotic Drugs for a remuneration of USD 2000 and a free flight ticket as promised by some persons whom she met during her stay at Delhi. Later she was arrested under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and was produced before the Magistrate, who remanded her for Judicial Custody. |

Rs.85 billion central grant sought for Bangalore

Karnataka Wednesday sought a special package of Rs.85 billion (Rs.8,500 crore) from the central government to meet the infrastructure needs of Bangalore. The state’s request for the huge assistance was made to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in New Delhi by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who led a delegation of ministers, representatives of small parties and leading Kannada writers.
The Congress and the Janata Dal-Secular did not join the delegation as the main purpose of its visit to New Delhi was to raise the issue of alleged central government’s failure to meet the state’s fertilizer needs. |
